Michael Jackson: HIStory – Video Greatest Hits $11.58 Rated: NA Synopsis: Michael Jackson, the self-proclaimed King of Pop, earned his title by blasting off from his roots as the child star of the Jackson 5 with a series of albums — Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad, and Dangerous — that dominated the charts and spawned a string of super-slick music videos, helping to define the infant form. His extraordinary approach to MTV fodder involved stretching his musical concepts into narratives, starting with his seminal video for “Billie Jean.” The music video landmarks collected here — from the wind-blown “Billie” to the explosive “Beat It,” from the high-kicking, laser-smooth “Rock with You” to his John Landis-directed masterpiece, “Thriller” — represent an artist at the top his game. This DVD goes several steps further, though, including such fan must-haves as the rare long versions of “Bad” (directed with aplomb by Martin Scorsese from a gritty Richard Price script) and “The Way You Make Me Feel.” The tracks follow in order, with the original albums marked in parentheses: Brace Yourself (HIStory, Part 1) Billie Jean (Thriller) The Way You Make Me Feel (Long Version) (Bad) Black or White (Dangerous) Rock with You (Off the Wall) Bad (Long Version) (Bad) Thriller (Thriller) Beat It (Thriller) Remember the Time (Dangerous) Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough (Off the Wall) Heal the World (Bad) Michael Jackson has been responsible for some of the most well-known and influential music videos of all time. This release collects ten of his most renowned clips. Among the promotional clips and short films on this collection are the eighteen minute Martin Scorsese directed mini-film “Bad,” the John Landis helmed “Thriller,” and the controversial “Black or White.” PRODUCTION AND TECHNICAL NOTES:Sound: Dolby DigitalFeatures: Discography; English subtitles; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound; PCM stereo; Instant chapter access to short filmsLanguage: EnglishSubTitles: EnglishTime: 1 Hour 15 Minutes |

Greatest Hits $18.98 Released in February 2007, seven years after the group’s breakup and on the very day Jill Cunniff released her debut solo album, City Beach, Greatest Hits is a good basic overview of Luscious Jackson’s career, weighing in with 15 songs, plus four remixes and a brief intro. This downplays their beginnings as bohemian hipsters, selecting only “Let Yourself Get Down” from their still-startling debut EP, In Search of Manny (the near-theme song “Daughters of the Kaos” should have made the cut), in favor of representing their three Capitol LPs — 1994′s Natural Ingredients, 1996′s Fever In Fever Out, and 1999′s Electric Honey — in nearly equal measures. All the singles are here, beginning with the radio hits — the sleek, sultry “Naked Eye” (present in its radio mix), the dense, slyly funky “Citysong,” and the streamlined but charming “Ladyfingers” — but also encompassing the U.K. singles “Deep Shag,” “Here,” and “Under Your Skin.” When distilled to their singles and key album tracks, Luscious Jackson winds up sounding more consistent than they often did over the course of a full album, and if their blend of hip-hop, alt-rock, and pop eclecticism is very much a sound that’s instantly evocative of the ’90s, it has lost none of its appeal a decade later. If anything, their relaxed funkiness, off-hand hooks, and casual style sounds better than it did in their peak, as this charming, listenable Greatest Hits proves. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

Michael Jackson – Gold [8/26] * $15.6 This two-disc greatest-hits collection covers Michael Jackson`s solo years at Motown, which means there`s no "Billie Jean," "Rock With You," "Beat It," or anything from his superstar career as an adult. Essentially, the set features the child Michael from 1971`s "Got to Be There," his first solo single, through tracks taken from 1975`s FOREVER, MICHAEL, his final release on Motown. The album also includes select Jackson 5 hits, including some of the group`s smashes that feature Michael on lead vocals, including "I Want You Back" and "Never Can Say Goodbye." Michael Jackson – Love Songs $9.98 Personnel includes: Michael Jackson, The Jackson 5.Producers include: Bobby Taylor, Mel Larson, Jerry Marcellino, Hal Davis, Brian Holland.Compilation producers: Harry Weinger, Anthony Ellis.Recorded between 1969 and 1975. Includes liner notes by Brian Chin. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Liner Note Author: Brian Chin.Recording information: 02/1970.Arrangers: James Anthony Carmichael; David Blumberg; Fonce Mizell; Gene Page; David Van De Pitte; John Bahler; Bob West .Released in January of 2002, Motown`s Love Songs contains 14 love songs and ballads Michael Jackson recorded, either by himself or with the Jackson 5, during his time on Motown in the early `70s. There are a few familiar songs here, such as "Who`s Lovin` You," but the Love Songs series prides itself on mood, not hits, while providing just one or two tracks as collector`s bait (a previously unreleased version of "I`ll Be There" or the original mix of "Call on Me," for example). This means that it`s the odd collection that sort of appeals to the dedicated, since it gives a different spin on the artist (but not really, since it recycles the catalog), and it sort of appeals to the casual fan, since it digs through albums to provide what they`re looking for (but not really, since there aren`t that many big hits here). So it fulfills the promise of the title quite well, but that doesn`t necessarily mean that a lot of people will really need it (unless they`re looking for mood music, of course). ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Now a movie capturing the complicated figure in vulnerable moments during the last days of his life, THIS IS IT boasts a soundtrack comprised of the classic originals of the hits featured in the film. It also contains a new single co-written by Paul Anka and featuring Jackson`s brothers on back-up vocals, as well as a variety of demos. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Greatest Hits! $7.98 The “King of Hawaiian Entertainment,” Don Ho, croons his way into lounge music history with this laid-back, crowd-pleasing set. Featuring his classic “Tiny Bubbles,” and sounding a lot like another crown prince of croon, Dean Martin, Ho eases his way into our hearts with this mix of Hawaiian-influenced music and easy listening tunes. The only misstep is “Ain’t No Big Thing,” which attempts to rock but sounds forced and simply out of place. But when Ho sings about the Islands or romantic love, all is well. The set comes to life particularly on live cuts when there is participation from the crowd. Backed by his able band, the Aliis, Ho sounds great on the wistful love song “I’ll Remember You” and on the singalong “E Lai Ka Lei Lei” (Beach Party Song). On other cuts such as “Beautiful Kauai” and “The Following Sea,” percussion and soft choral backing provide the perfect background for Ho’s exploration of the mellow side of Hawaii. Listening to this set that was originally released in the late ’60s, it is easy to see how Ho has sustained his popularity over the years — his laid-back voice and style seem to embody the essence of the Islands themselves. ~ Michael Ofjord, All Music Guide |

Trace Adkins – Greatest Hits Collection, Vol. 1 $8.85 This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.Producers: Scott Hendricks, Trey Bruce, Dann Huff, Paul Worley, Bobby Terry.Recorded between 1996 & 2002.Photographers: Pamela Springsteen; Michael Lavine; Nigel Parry; Mark Tucker .The optimistically titled GREATEST HITS COLLECTION VOL. 1 encapsulates the first seven years in the career of Trace Adkins, who made a huge splash on the country scene with his 1996 debut. That auspicious album is represented by the hits "(This Ain`t No) Thinkin` Thing," "There`s a Girl in Texas," and "I Left Something Turned on at Home," all of which presented Adkins as the acceptable face of new country, polished enough for `90s Nashville, but with roots enough to give him credibility (he`d even done some time in a gospel group).Successive albums followed an essentially similar path, mixing ballads and honky-tonkers in equal measure. The title track of 2001`s CHROME strays a bit from the pattern, sounding like a mix of Shania Twain and Steve Miller, but one of the two new, previously unreleased tracks is the brightest indication of Adkins`s future. "Welcome to Hell" is a post-9/11 song that`s miles ahead of Alan Jackson and Toby Keith`s efforts toward that end, replacing breast-beating jingoism and intellectual laziness with a much more subtle, even humorous approach well-served by Adkins`s rich baritone. Various Artists – Motown Greatest Hits $32.17 This three-CD collection compiles many of Motown`s biggest hits from the `60s, `70s, and `80s.A three-disc set released by Universal International, Motown Greatest Hits is a wonderful collection that combines the obvious Motown hits with material a little less at the center of the label`s patented 1960`s sound. Rick James` "Superfreak" and Billy Preston`s "With You I`m Born Again" are just two of the titles mixed in here that give this anthology a more comprehensive feel than the usual Motown compilations. Relatively uncommon tracks like "I Hear a Symphony" by the Isley Brothers, and the movie theme song "Ben" by Michael Jackson are also included, adding to the historical sweep of this boxed set. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Great White – Greatest Hits $6.98 Producers: Michael Wagener, Alan Niven, Michael Lardie, Mark Kendall.Compilation producer: Kevin Flaherty.Includes liner notes by Gerri Miller.Digitally remastered by Dave McEowen (Capitol Mastering).Recording information: Electric Ladyland, New York, NY; MTV Unplugged; Wembley Arena, England.Photographer: Neil Zlozower.A cursory glance at Great White`s discography would suggest that they don`t need another compilation. But Capitol Records` 1993 kiss-off The Best of Great White: 1986-1992 was a skimpy set that omitted the Top 40 pop hit "The Angel Song" and other key tracks; Back to Back Hits was shared with April Wine and contained only five Great White tracks; the 2000 Best of Great White was a ten-track budget album from Capitol Special Markets; and Latest & Greatest consists of re-recordings. Thus, Greatest Hits is the first thorough compilation of the band`s EMI and Capitol recordings, 1984-1992. Most of Great White`s pop and album rock hits are included in their original versions, though the minor album rock chart entry "Lady Red Light" is missing, and the versions of "House of Broken Love" and "Desert Moon" are live recordings, the former previously issued only as a single B-side, the latter from the Japan-only album Live in New York. Other rarities include a bluesy alternate mix of "Face the Day" from a cassette EP, the novelty non-LP B-side "Wasted Rock Ranger," and a non-LP single cover of Led Zeppelin`s "Babe I`m Gonna Leave You" from the band`s 1990 MTV Unplugged appearance that emphasizes their similarity to the earlier group, especially Jack Russell`s Robert Plant sound-alike vocals. Capitol has not acquired any tracks from Great White`s recordings for subsequent labels, so that, for example, the Top Ten album rock track "Sail Away," originally released on Zoo, is not here. But this is a good survey of Great White`s most popular recordings, and it deserves its name. ~ William Ruhlmann Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |
